We are each born with an internal program for resilience. Modern psychological research concludes that no matter the challenges we face, we have an inborn capacity to adapt to and recover from life’s setbacks, illnesses, injuries, and accidents.

Through my experiences, I learned that there are two preconditions to human flourishing – healthy attachments and authenticity, i.e., being true to ourselves. As humans, we are born completely dependent and remain so for longer than any other mammals on earth. As our sense of self develops, we learn that we need others to survive. We fulfil this need through attachment, which is the drive for affection and connection to others.

Having the self-awareness to recognize our own triggers empowers us to avoid the situations that will cause us undue stress, or at least to be better prepared for them.

Tolerance and compassion are your secret weapons when it comes to developing and strengthening your resilience. The more tolerant and compassionate you are, the less likely you are to be triggered by circumstances outside your control and the less regret you will have about behaving in a way you later berate yourself for.
